How old do children have to be to enroll at La Scuola preschool?

At our preschool campus we offer programs for children between the ages of 2-5 years. We currently offer an afternoon playgroup (Spazio Gioco) for ages 2-3.

Preschool programs for ages 2.5 and above, ages 3-4 and 4-5 are morning or full-day programs.

What kind of schedules do you offer?

The Spazio Gioco Playgroup (ages 2-3) meets twice a week in the afternoon either Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday. Spazio Gioco is also available 4 afternoons per week. The Young Grandi (ages 2.5 and up), Grandi (ages 3-4) and Grandissimi (ages 4-5) programs are 5 day programs. Extended care is available until 5:30 PM.

We do not have Italian at home, will my child still learn Italian at La Scuola?

We do not require children to speak Italian when they enter the preschool, and the large majority of mono-lingual children will just pick up a second language when exposed to it consistently. We try to keep a balance of Italian speaking and non-Italian speaking families at the school. We ask parents who do not speak Italian, to show their child that they value bilingual education, by reading Italian books, singing songs and if possible, learn Italian themselves.

What is the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach?

At La Scuola, the Reggio Emilia-inspired approach to learning is a pillar of our educational philosophy. We view children as the protagonists of the learning process. Children learn at their own pace by experiencing the world around them and interacting with parents, peers and teachers. Through materials and provocations provided by teachers, children explore, experiment and discover the world. This happens in a thoughtful space where the environment is viewed as the “third teacher”. Reggio Emilia-inspired schools often have an atelier (a special workshop where art and project-based learning takes place), a piazza, where children congregate and share meals and an outdoor space that provides additional learning opportunities.

How can we learn more about La Scuola? Do you offer tours of the preschool?

The best way to get to know our school is by attending one of our open houses (registration required), which take place in the fall and winter. Once we receive your completed online application and application fee, you have the option to join a small tour of the preschool. Tours are offered from November – January.

When are preschool applications due?

For the 2019-2020 school year, La Scuola’s online application form is due by January 15, 2019. We ask prospective parents to attend an open house and familiarize themselves with our programs by exploring our website, before submitting an application. The open house schedule is published on our website in September.

Do you conduct parent interviews for the preschool?

Yes! La Scuola is one school, Preschool through 8th grade (enrolling up to 8th grade in 2019-2020). We would like to meet all prospective families who are looking to join our school and community through 8th grade. The parent interviews are informal group interviews with 2-3 couples at a time.

When are preschool decision letters mailed?

Enrollment decision letters for preschool grades for the 2019-2020 school year are emailed on March 12th, 2019.

What is a Young Grandi spot?

Young Grandi applicants are 3 years old by March 1, 2020. The assumption is that Young Grandi children will be in Grandi or Grandissimi for 2 years (2 different classrooms, different sets of teachers) to meet the Kindergarten cut off date of 5 years old by September 1.
