P.E. and Athletics

PE at La Scuola, Kindergarten – Grade 8

Kindergarten-Grade 5

At La Scuola, our Physical Education (PE) program is designed to foster a love for movement and promote overall wellness among our students. From preschool through middle school, our curriculum emphasizes the importance of physical activity, not just for athletic prowess but for building a sense of community and personal growth. In the early years, we focus on body movement, gross motor skills, coordination, strength, and balance, helping our youngest learners develop a keen awareness of their bodies. As students progress through the grades, we build their confidence and motor skills, preparing them for more organized and skill-based activities in middle school. Here, they explore their personal fitness through collaboration, organized play, game design, skill-building, and mindfulness, setting the foundation for lifelong healthy habits.

Middle School Athletics at La Scuola: A Journey of Pride, Growth, and Community Spirit (Grades 6-8)

IB-MYP Physical and Health Education aims to empower students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active while developing the motivation for making healthy and informed life choices. To this end, physical and health education courses foster the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes contributing to a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Our PE program aligns with the guidelines of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Reggio Emilia Approach®. These educational frameworks emphasize inquiry-based learning, student-centered activities, and holistic development. Students develop knowledge and understanding about health and physical activity, engaging in inquiry, analysis, and performance to improve their skills. Practical applications of these skills are encouraged through diverse physical activities, enhancing both personal and social development. Reflective practices are integral, allowing students to set goals, take responsible action, and evaluate their performance and that of their peers. By integrating these methodologies, La Scuola ensures that our PE program not only promotes physical fitness but also nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for health and wellness.

Students engaged in physical and health education will explore a variety of concepts that help foster an awareness of physical development and health perspectives, as well as positive social interaction. Physical activity and health are of central importance to human identity and global communities, creating meaningful connections among people, nations, cultures and the natural world.

Our Sports Program

The La Scuola Athletics experience is a journey which is a source of growth, pride, and enthusiasm for all members of our community. At our school, athletics is serious and fun; it includes skill, intelligence, passion, and above all, heart. Our student athletes play because they love the game, value their teammates, and take pride in representing something bigger than themselves. La Scuola Athletics fosters a spirit of competition, commitment, leadership, and true sportsmanship regardless of the result, while honoring cultural diversity and gender equity.

We offer team sports for the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons.  Below is a list of what we offer in the 2024 - 2025 academic year. Other possible league options include Tennis, Table Tennis, and Indoor Soccer.

  • Fall: Volleyball and Performance Training
  • Winter: Basketball and Performance Training
  • Spring: Track and Field and Performance Training

Student-athletes represent La Scuola in the San Francisco International Athletic League (SFIAL), competing against our neighboring independent schools. Last year 80% of our middle school student body participated in at least one of our athletic programs. We look forward to the ongoing growth and success of the program.
