Continuous Learning Plan - Grades 6-8

Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Dear Middle School Families,

I write to update you on plans for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. From the beginning of this long summer, our commitment to our families has been in-person learning in compliance with SFDPH Guidelines for schools on all three campuses, unless otherwise mandated by government and health officials. Following those mandates, we will begin the year with remote learning for Grades 6-8 while we await permission to return to campus.

We will hold an on-site orientation on Wednesday, August 12 to distribute Chromebooks to new students, review the learning tools we will be using, establish remote learning norms, and enjoy a brief socially distant time together. To comply with the health ordinance, we need to do this orientation in half-grade cohorts (fewer than 12 people) outside on the yard. These two-hour sessions will be staggered hourly throughout the day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Families will receive their child’s designated time by the end of next week.

The Middle School schedule this year is designed in long learning blocks that will remain consistent in both our remote and on-campus scenarios. While learning on campus, students will remain with their grade-level cohort throughout the day and only interact with three teachers per day. Fewer daily adult-student interactions serve a health goal of minimizing risk during the pandemic. The long blocks also serve a learning goal of allowing students to engage in focused inquiry. Also, having the same flow of subjects in both the on-campus and on-line scenarios provides for a routine that will allow us to maintain consistent learning in these highly changeable times. Students will receive their schedules on Wednesday, August 12.

During the time that we engage in distance learning, students can expect to engage in learning from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily with an advisory period (1:1 and small group), whole class social interaction (online recess), and three classes. We are exploring the possibility of a weekly outdoor meet up for the advisories.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Douglas Lowney
