Final Class Project: Mission Campus Mural

The 2020 student mural was conceptualized and brought to fruition through collaboration with local muralist and the generosity of donors through La Dolce Vita.

Our “artist in residence" Leah Tumerman and our 10 graduating students started with the goal of creating a mural design that would reflect the importance of Identity. Leah prompted students to consider public art as a platform for both storytelling and highly visible communication. To consider this moment as well as their audience; future La Scuola students, the city of San Francisco, and the world.

Each student submitted a unique perspective, but the exploration and celebration of personal identity proved a common thread. In the final mural, every student is featured in a moment, painted onto the stone. It is as if they are proclaiming to the world in an uncertain time, "I was here".

Students answered these prompts:

  • What activity, body movement, posture, or props best represent me?
  • Who am I, what do I like?
  • What do I offer the world?
  • What do I want to say?

Grazie Mille to Silvia Bagnacani, our Art Teacher, and artist in residence, Leah Tumerman for leading this incredible project to celebrate La Scuola’s first-ever Grade 8 graduating class.
